Bisphenol-A (BPA) imports into China were reported at 45,007 tonnes in May 2009, a 72% increase from the same month in 2008, according to statistics released by the Chinese Customs on Tuesday.
While this represented a 12% dip from volumes sold into China from April 2009, it was still considerably higher than expectations of most market sources, considering the seasonal lull due to regional holidays in China and various other northeast Asian makers during the month.
One trader pointed out that the higher import statistics could be due to traders and end-users hoarding inventories on the back of earlier speculation that prices could rise due to climbing feedstock costs.
