Gaoqiao Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Chinese energy major Sinopec, shut its 60,000 tonne/year No 1 phenol-acetone unit in Pudong, Shanghai, on Wednesday. The unit would remain off line until the end of this month, without elaborating the reasons for the shutdown. Feedstock shortage and prevailing weak market conditions might be the key factors behind the shutdown. Its 60,000 tonne/year No 2 unit at the same site was undergoing expansion, and was slated to restart in mid-September, the source said.
